Co-creating a future where every cancer patient benefits
from the collective knowledge of Europe's data healthcare ecosystem
Who we are
DigiONE is building Europe's first federated digital network that connects clinical care records with molecular diagnostics and patient outcomes safeguarding the highest standards of privacy and GDPR compliance.
This European real-world evidence research network enhances privacy protection, automates data processes, and improves care quality while enabling:

Pragmatic precision medicine clinical trials

Evidence-based treatment decisions

Advanced Real-World Evidence generation

Accelerated innovation in oncology research
Digione is global by design
DigiONE is a federated digital research and real-world data (RWD) network spanning 15 leading cancer centres in 9 countries, supported by 10 private sector and Small and Medium-sized Enterprise (SME) partners. DigiONE operates in 19 S3 regions within the EU. Of its 26 partners, 18 from More Developed Regions will share expertise with 6 from Transition Regions and 2 from Less developed Regions.

What Will DigiONE I3 Deliver?
The DigiONE I3 project delivers real-world evidence (RWE) cancer data across Europe, enabling secure, privacy-preserving federated access throughout the patient care journey for advancing cancer research.
DigiONE I3 supports cancer research and care by:

Providing a Minimal Essential Description of Cancer (MEDOC) as a standardized data model for oncology research across participating centres

Establishing and maintaining a federated data infrastructure that allows cancer data to remain at source hospitals

Addressing research needs through enhanced interoperability tools to automate data extraction from both structured and unstructured clinical data

Enabling specialised molecular data integration for genetic testing results from different platforms that will evolve and expand over time

Supporting digital research service capacity development at participating hospitals, through knowledge transfer from more digitally mature regions to less developed ones

Implementing standardised commercial service offerings as part of the project’s business models with fair benefit sharing for advanced digital research services
DigiONE I3's annual meeting brings together network partners to review work package progress, share deliverables, and coordinate collaborative activities in digital oncology innovation.
This year, the meeting will be focusing on sharing progress across all work packages and planning future network activities.
DigiONE I3’s Objectives
DigiONE is organized into 5 work packages that occur in overlapping phases:
DigiONE I3’s Timeline
Project Set-up – Digital maturity assessments
- Initial surveys and assessments of hospitals’ digital maturity
- Establish project governance structures
- Initiate capacity building activities
First Wave Implementation – Research service models & Leadership education
- Jumpstart network hospitals to a common, interoperable digital maturity standard
- Develop and implement the Minimal Essential Description of Cancer (MEDOC) as a standardized format
- Implement basic OMOP research data repositories at participating hospitals
- Design omics extension for molecular data integration
- Establish federation capabilities for the first group of hospitals
- Build digital research capacity with the first leadership cohort
- Develop initial commercial models and contracting for research services
Second Wave Implementation - Technology deployment & Molecular data integration
- Extend implementation to additional hospitals
- Build federated learning capabilities, especially for imaging data
- Implement molecular data solutions at pilot hospitals
- Second research leadership cohort development
- Deploy data quality monitoring dashboards
- Complete technology proof-of-concept for federated studies
- Develop and test new commercial service offers and contracts
Project Completion and Transition – Final education & Commercial services
- Completion of second wave of hospital leadership education programs
- Finalization of commercial digital research services as the ongoing business model
- Transition to sustainable research infrastructure beyond the funding period
DigiONE’s impact
DigiONE I3 will contribute to:
- Position Europe competitively in precision oncology research services and trials
- Create a European market in digital oncology services to hospitals
- Implement the vision of European Health Data Space for Cancer research and care

A federated learning system for precision oncology in Europe: DigiONE
Nat Med 30, 334–337 (2024)
DigiONE is a pilot European learning health system in precision oncology that aims to identify optimal cancer treatments by learning from every patient, not just those in trials, through privacy-preserving interrogation of their standardized routine electronic health records.
